Back Lands Development Project
At long last it can be confirmed
that the much talked about development in the centre of the Town
is well and truly underway. The Forum sold the site with full
Planning Permission on the 9th November 2005 for a price of €675,000.00.
The Forum has made a profit of €264,000.00 on this transaction
and all of this money will be reinvested in other projects for
the improvement of Manorhamilton. More about those inside.
I am sure when you look at the
visual impression of what part of the finished development will
look like you will be pleasantly surprised in view of some reports
that has been in circulation about this fine development.
The Project To Date
In February of 2004 Leitrim County Council employed a firm of
architectural and urban designers known as Icon to carry out a
survey on Manorhamilton and form a framework plan for the town.
A very detailed document was produced that is known as the Icon
Report and at present it is with Leitrim County Council for implementation.
As can be seen from the extracts in the Icon report the consultants
highlighted the need for development in this core area of the
town.
The back lands project in the town of Manorhamilton is one of
a number of projects undertaken by the Enterprise Forum to enhance
the town. The site is derived from the combination of a series
of narrow back land plots at the rear of Main Street. This combination
gives a new town centre site with an area of 0.7 Hectares (1.75
Acres).
Architectural plans for the new town centre proposed for the
Back Lands have been drafted by Haslette Sweeney Architects. The
plans envisage shop units, apartments and a new streetscape. A
major feature of the development is the proposal to establish
a one-stop office of Leitrim County Council as part of the project,
where all services currently only provided in Carrick-on- Shannon
will be available, more conveniently, to the public in North Leitrim
e.g. Motor Taxation, Planning, Housing, Environmental services,
Roads Administration, Education Grants etc.
