Training for the Retail Industry

Manorhamilton Enterprise Forum hosted a series of training programmes aimed at improving competitiveness in the retail sector. These programmes were open to all retail businesses in Manorhamilton and the surrounding areas.

Retail Selling Skills and Customer Service
This workshop is designed to increase the productivity of those involved in retail selling. The workshop will benefit the novice sales person as it clearly identifies the sales process. The workshop includes:
Customer Service Communication; Buyer motives; The psychology of the sales process; Finding out what the customer needs or wants; Handling complaints in a positive manner; Asking for the sale Up-selling

Health & Safety in the Workplace
This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of the responsibilities of employees and employers in relation to health and safety in the workplace.
The workshop will examine the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 1989, and Health and Welfare at Work (General Applications) regulations 1983.

Basic Food Hygiene
This workshop will provide employees in the retail sector with an understanding of Food hygiene requirements as outlined by the Food Safety Authority in the Food Safety Training Standard Level One, topics will include:
Safe handling practices; Correct hygienic practices;
Cross contamination and hygienic practices necessary to prevent it;
How food can be put at risk by chemical, physical and biological hazards;
High and low risk activities; How to keep appropriate food safety records.

Mentoring Support for Business in Manorhamilton

Objective: To provide mentoring support to existing and new start businesses in Manorhamilton and the surrounding areas. This mentoring will assist businesses and entrepreneurs achieve business growth and competitiveness. The advantage of this method of one-to-one mentoring allows participants discuss issues of particular concern and relevance to their own business that they would otherwise not discuss in a group training environment. Specifically these mentoring sessions will:

  • Identify aims and objectives of individual businesses and entrepreneurs
  • Assist owner / managers plan for and implement aims and objectives
  • Develop business plans
  • Develop marketing strategies
  • Advise on funding opportunities
  • Assist with funding applications
  • Advise on regulatory requirements including, Health &Safety, Food Hygiene,
    Employers Obligations & Procedures
  • Identify training requirements
  • Identify barriers to growth
  • Assist in developing strategies to overcome barriers to growth
  • Work with and identify opportunities to improve business competitiveness
    including innovation in service delivery and product development

Each business will receive 11-day on-site mentoring. A comprehensive report will be compiled including all subjects discussed and key recommendations on type of training and further support required by these businesses that the Manorhamilton Enterprise Forum can assist with. Mentoring reports will be submitted to the Manorhamilton Enterprise Forum.
